PRESS RELEASE (issued Tuesday 08 Jan 2008) New Year update from the GPC on GMS contract negotiations
The BMA's GP Committee (GPC) today (Tuesday 8th January 2008) sent a second letter to the profession outlining in detail the current situation with GMS contract negotiations for 2008/2009. In the letter the GPC Chairman, Dr Laurence Buckman, urges GPs to consider the impact the government's proposed changes could have on the future of primary care in Britain. He says:
"The government appears to be determined to move from traditional GP partnerships to one where the private sector would play a much greater part in the future structure and running of general practice. What is at risk is not simply a practice funding increase but the personal, list-based system of general practice that is so valued by the vast majority of our patients."
The letter urges GPs to speak to colleagues and local GP representatives to ensure they are as informed as they can be about the situation before responding to a poll of the profession that the GPC will be conducting shortly.
The GPC also wants all GPs to help patients and the public understand what they are in danger of losing. As a first step it has produced a patient newsletter and is asking all practices to display copies in their waiting rooms and their web sites.
