General practice and your family doctor service is under threat.
The government is taking steps, which doctors believe will harm patient services. It is encouraging commercial companies to set up and provide GP services, but many family doctors are concerned that if this happens, company profits will come before your needs.

TESTICULAR CANCER

As part of the current
MALE CANCER AWARENESS campaign the doctors are reminding our male patients to check themselves regularly. This is usually best done whilst taking a shower or bath as the warmth will cause the testicles to drop and be easier to check.

Testicular cancer is rare but is the most common cancer for males from 15 to 45 years of age. Unfortunately, it is on the increase but when detected and treated at an early stage there is a good chance there will be no further problems.

Or visit the Cancer Help web site.

Employment Opportunities

How does the Highcliffe Medical Centre compare with the National performance according to the department of Health's first year measurement of the Quality and Outcomes Framework?

The department of health estimated that the average practice would achieve 750 points in 2004/ 2005 and results were published by the DoH on 31st Aug 2005. http://www.dh.gov.uk

These results show that general practices in the UK far exceeded the DoH expectations; the average practice achieved 959 points (91% of maximum).
Practices in Wessex have demonstrated what many already knew and that the quality of general practice is high and significantly above the national average.

Average scores for each county out of 1050:

Dorset 1024
Hampshire & IoW 1004
Wiltshire 996
S&E Dorset  1022
Southampton City 1011
The New Forest 1034

Highcliffe Medical Centre points achieved 1043.7

These figures should reassure our patients that Highcliffe is performing well. Whilst we all recognise that there are always improvements that can be made to our Practice, our patients continue to receive an excellent service

There are many factors that can distort the quality indicator points such as practices with a high turnover of patients or places where there are a lot of asylum seekers, and those where English is not the first language.

EDUCATION

Highcliffe Medical Centre
has always welcomed the opportunity to teach and train doctors, nurses and students because this ensures that we all continue to question our daily practice and endeavour to keep up to date.

Therefore, everyone benefits from the involvement in their continuing medical education. Some of the trainees consultations will be recorded for subsequent assessment.
